Bus fares have increased markedly in the last ten years, with passengers in the Metropolitan areas seeing the biggest increases.
Bus fares increased by 17.5% in England between 2004/05 and 2016/17. The highest increase was in Metropolitan areas (27%) followed by London (19%), with a much smaller increase in English non-Metropolitan areas (9%).
Revenue per passenger
Despite the increase in fares, the revenue per passenger has actually fallen in England since 2004/05.
Revenue per vehicle
The average operating revenue per bus vehicle mile reached £4.48 pence in 2016/17, an increase of 14% since 2004/05 once inflation is accounted for. There is wide variation between the revenue per vehicle km achieved in London and other parts of England.
