Over the last decade bus networks have been contracting outside London (particularly in Metropolitan areas) whilst growing in London.
Local bus service miles have fallen 9% in Great Britain since 2007/08. This trend is not consistent over all areas, with vehicle miles increasing in London (6%) whilst falling in both metropolitan (-16%) and non metropolitan areas (-6%).
Bus passenger miles
Passenger miles have seen significant decline in the last ten years - particularly in the Metropolitan areas which have seen a 16% decline. Meanwhile, London has seen significant growth with a 5.5% increase.
Passenger miles per vehicle mile
On average there are 11.3 passenger miles on local bus services per bus vehicle mile, in Great Britain. This figure varies across the country, with London having almost twice as many bus passenger miles per vehicle mile as other areas.
