Vehicle speeds and reliability help to define the relative attractiveness of different modes, as well as how long journeys of specific lengths are likely to take.

Key Indicators

Average journey speeds and delays

There is a wide variation in average speeds on locally managed 'A' roads across the City Regions. Average speeds have decreased in all areas since 2015, with the exception of South Yorkshire. Over the same time period, all major urban areas in the England have seen an increase in delays on locally managed 'A' roads.

Journey time reliability

In 2015, 79% of journeys were completed on time on Motorways and A roads (Roads maintained by the Highways Agency). There has been a slight decrease in the last five years.
