The reasons that people travel change over time, which impacts on the destinations that people travel to, the length of journeys and also the modes that are most likely to be used. Shopping and commuting remain the main reasons for travelling in 2018.
How many trips do people make and by what mode of transport?
Over recent years the number of trips people make has started to increase again, reverting back to levels last seen in 2010. Whilst much of this increase can be accounted for by more walking trips being recorded, there have been increases across a number of modes.
