Understanding the social make up of a city is important for planning a transport network. Levels of household income, educational attainment, and health are among a wide range of factors which all combine to influence how, why and where people travel.
Why people travel
The reasons that people travel change over time, which impacts on the destinations that people travel to, the length of journeys and also the modes that are most likely to be used. Shopping and commuting remain the main reasons for travelling in 2017.
How many trips do people make and by what mode of transport?
People in 2017 are making on average around 9% fewer trips than in 2005. However, certain modes have bucked the trend and people are making more trips on foot and by surface rail.
