Chair of West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Committee, Cllr James Lewis, has been elected as Chair of the City Regions Transport Special Interest Group.
The group brings together councillors from the six Metropolitan areas of West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Tyne and Wear and West Midlands.
Cllr Lewis said:
‘I am very pleased to take on this role at a time when there is a growing recognition of the importance of high quality and integrated transport provision for the city regions if they are to fully realise their economic potential. I look forward to working with my colleagues to make the case for a fairer share of available transport funding for the city regions, and for the powers we need to deliver single integrated public transport networks with simple, oyster-style smart ticketing. With the general election less than a year away we believe there is a broad consensus around the need for our city regions to have transport systems that look and feel more like London. To achieve this we need a similar deal on transport funding and powers to that which London has had, and this is what we will be arguing for in the months ahead.’
