Light Rail Inquiry

Sheffield Supertram travelling down a city street
An inquiry by the All Party Parliamentary Light Rail Group and pteg

In the Autumn of 2009, the All Party Parliamentary Light Rail Group (APPLRG) and pteg set up an inquiry to consider progress in developing modern trams in the UK and to examine how barriers to tram scheme development and implementation might be tackled.

The final report of the Inquiry was published in February 2010.

The Inquiry found that light rail and modern tram schemes can help transform urban transport systems as well as the wider urban realm, promoting greener and smarter economic growth in the process. To bring back the tram to more city streets it identified a need for a clearer lead from Government, less bias against trams in the appraisal processes, and for ways to be found of further cutting the costs of new schemes.
