As I reflect on the journey of the Urban Transport Group’s Leadership Academy, I’m filled with pride and a sense of wonder at just how far we’ve come. What began as a small initiative has now blossomed into a thriving programme that continues to evolve and inspire both current and future leaders in our transport sector. You can read more about our beginnings here.

This past October, we launched our fourth cohort of the Senior Leaders programme in Sheffield. If you’d told me back in 2022 that we’d reach this milestone, I’m not sure I would have believed it. Yet here we are - growing, learning and leading together.

Recognising the need to support leadership at all levels, we introduced the Aspiring Leaders programme for mid-level managers at the beginning of this year. The first cohort was a great success, and we’re excited to welcome the second group in January 2026.

To keep the momentum going, we’ve also added Alumni Events to our offer. These gatherings - held twice a year - bring together graduates from different cohorts to reconnect, share experiences and continue their leadership journeys. So far, we’ve hosted two events for cohorts two and three (of the Senior Leaders programme), and the feedback has been great.

One of the highlights of the Leadership Academy has been the diverse range of guest speakers that we are able to attract. From Metro Mayors and CEOs, to transport commissioners and even an Olympic Gold medallist, each speaker has brought a unique perspective and story that resonates deeply with our participants. Speakers have also brought specialist insights into the worlds of politics, inclusion and AI. Personally, I’ve learned so much about public speaking and the power of storytelling, and our cohorts have grown in confidence and built their own network of peers throughout the programmes. And thanks to our energetic Facilitator (Iain Smith of Network for Skills), every session is dynamic and engaging - there is never a dull moment!

We’re also seeing real impact. At least 33% of our alumni from the first three (Senior Leaders) cohorts have gone on to promotions or new opportunities. And with 100% of participants reporting that the programme met its objectives, it’s clear that the Academy is making a meaningful difference.

Now, with the Senior Leaders, Aspiring Leaders and Alumni Events all under the Leadership Academy umbrella, we’re entering an exciting new chapter. As the Academy expands, so do my ambitions for it. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes us next.
