Access to Services

Average minimum journey time to key services

In England, the average time taken to access key services (defined as the average of minimum journey times to medium sized centres of employment, schools and further education, doctors and hospitals, food stores and town centres) in 2016 was 17 minutes and 45 seconds by public transport or walking, 15 minutes by cycling and just over 10 minutes and 30 seconds in the car.

Average journey times vary across regions although the pattern of which modes are quickest remains fairly constant. The main exception is Inner London, where cycling is as quick as the car.
